Work on VL day

Work on VL day? Yes. I have to submit a paper to a symposium very soon but I got no time and also could not concentrate on writing the paper at office. Therefore, I applied for a vacation leave and stayed at home to work on the paper. Poor me........

Visiting the Bel

Today we had tea with Rayman, Keung and Ricky at Mongkok. An idea suddenly came out --- How about visiting Bel before the refurbishment? All of them were free and therefore we took a taxi there. They seemed to be fond of my new house, especially the club house. It was a wonderful experience for me to show (not show off!) my achievements in front of my good friends.

Bed

We went to choose a king-sized bed for the new house today. The first choice is "Simmons". The sales manager Mr. Chi is a funny guy who talked a lot about how good their beds were. Although Simmons bed is rather expensive, I will go for it as both Ceci and I want to enjoy a very relax and comfortable sleep in our dream house.

Hello Kitty Show

Books

Ceci emailed to me this morning, saying that she suddenly thought about the bookstore at Taiwan and missed it very much. Yes.....I also have the same feeling. If life is not so busy (esp. at work), I really wish that I can visit bookshop and read books more frequently.

busy

Busy...busy...busy....
After the arrival of new boss, my workload apparently increases. Besides, I have to prepare a PowerPoint for my boss's boss and a full paper for myself. Both are about GIS. So busy recently that I even have no time to read online newspaper in the morning!

The Green Sea Turtle

The story of the Green Sea Turtle inthe book "Why Cafe" is also excellent!

The turtle linked its movements to the movements of the water. When a wave was going toward the shore, and in the face of the turtle, he would float, and paddle just enough to hold his position. When the pull of the wave was back out to the ocean, he would paddle faster, so that he was using the movement of the water to his advantage. The turtle never fought the waves, but instead he used them.

Once someone knows why they are here—they know their Purpose For Existing (PFE), then they can spend their time doing things that fulfill it. People who don't know their PFE also spend their time on lots of things. The things they spend their time on are things that don't help them fulfill their PFE.

The green sea turtle taught us that if one isn't in tune with what he wants to do, he can waste energy on lots of things. Then when opportunities come up to do what he wants, he might not have the strength or time to spend on them.

In one's life, the incoming waves are made up of all the people, activities, and things that are trying to capture his attention, energy, and time but are not associated with his PFE. The outgoing waves are the people, activities, and things that can help him fulfill his PFE. Therefore, the more time and energy he wastes on the incoming waves, the less time and energy he has for the outgoing ones.

Why Cafe

These are the three main questions raised by the book "Why Cafe":
“Why are you here?”
“Do you fear death?”
“Are you fulfilled?”

I also found some interesting quotes in the book:

Part of the answer to your question about why we spend so much time preparing to do what we want, instead of just doing it, lies in the messages that are placed in front of us every day.”

How much of my definition of success, happiness, and fulfillment had been determined by people other than myself?”

Why wait to do what you want, when you can do it right now?”

Slow Response

No.1 was issued again this morning. This was done right after the daytime senior officer came back to the office. The night-time officer was blamed for his slow response to the changing TC situation! How? Cease acting!

No.1 lowered

As expected, No.1 signal was issued today. Every thing was fine with me during the shift work. Some extra work that has to be done:
1. Re-draw the radar observation made by coleagues of the last shift using BALL pen.
2. Analyse the Fujiwhara effect.

A TC is approaching HK and No.1 signal may be issued tomorrow. It means that I have to work shift tomorrow! Got to read the procedures and make sure that I am familiar with them.

Present perfect tense

We use the past simple for completed actions, where a past time reference is indicated. The past simple always refers to a past action.

With the present perfect tense, a clear time reference is very often not stated. The present perfect may or may not refer to a past action

Note:
Sometimes we use present perfect for an action that occurs during a period of time that is not yet finished. A clear time reference is given here but the action is not yet over. Let us illustrate this with some examples:

· We have simplified the application procedures this year. (It is still this year.)
· I have been inundated with e-mails today. (It is still today.)
· We have seen dramatic developments in the internet over the past decade. (It includes now/up to now.)

What is the difference between:

a) Have you been busy this morning?
b) Were you busy this morning?

In a) it is still this morning (before 12 noon), whereas in b) it is clearly the afternoon, evening, or later in the day.
