QE 超聲波

等到頸也長了,今天終於到QE照超聲波。醫院的儀器的確比診所的好,影像較清晰,頭身手腳都看得很清楚,不過,政府醫生始終是政府醫生,怎樣也不肯說是男還是女。

其實,仔有仔的好,女有女的好,讓上天安排吧!

Baby talk

Attended a talk sponsored by a milk powder company. The doctor explained how medicine would affect a pregnant woman. Quite useful. The doctor's presentation skill was good, his speed of speech was not fast at all (I should learn this)!

Burberry

There are only 2 days left before our 1st wedding anniversary. Today Ceci bought me a Burberry shirt with blue stripes as the annivsersary gift. Yeah....I love it. Will wear it when I deliver a talk in July.

More on Press Release

More to come about press release, from http://www.press-release-writing.com/10_essential_tips.htm :

1. Make sure the information is newsworthy.
2. Tell the audience that the information is intended for them and why they should continue to read it.
3. Start with a brief description of the news, then distinguish who announced it, and not the other way around.
4. Ask yourself, "How are people going to relate to this and will they be able to connect?"
5. Make sure the first 10 words of your release are effective, as they are the most important.
6. Avoid excessive use of adjectives and fancy language.
7. Deal with the facts.
8. Provide as much Contact information as possible: Individual to Contact, address, phone, fax, email, Web site address.
9. Make sure you wait until you have something with enough substance to issue a release.
10. Make it as easy as possible for media representatives to do their jobs.

Press Release

Guidelines on writing a good press release: http://www.nsti.org/press/prtips.html

I extracted some of the main points:

Is your news "newsworthy"?
The purpose of a press release is to inform the world of your news item. Do not use your press release to try and make a sale. A good press release answers all of the "W" questions (who, what, where, when and why), providing the media with useful information about your organization, product, service or event. If you read your press release and it reads like an advertisement, rewrite it.

Start strong
Your headline and first paragraph should tell the story. The rest of your press release should provide the detail. You have a matter of seconds to grab your reader's attention. Do not blow it with a weak opening.

Not everything is news
Your excitement about something does not necessarily mean that you have a newsworthy story. Think about your audience. Will someone else find your story interesting? This is a common problem. Let's assume that you have just spent a lot of effort launching a new online store. Announcing your company's opening is always an exciting time for any business, but the last thing the media wants to write about is another online store. This is old news and uninteresting. Instead, focus on the features of your online shopping experience, unique products and services. Answer the question? Why should anyone care? (Avoid cliches such as "customers save money" or "great customer service".) Focus on the aspects of your news item that truly set you apart from everyone else.

Economy of words
Use only enough words to tell your story. Avoid using unnecessary adjectives, flowery language, or redundant expressions such as "added bonus" or "first time ever". If you can tell your story with fewer words, do it. Wordiness detracts from your story. Keep it concise. Make each word count.

Beware of jargon
While a limited amount of jargon will be required if your goal is to optimize your news release for online search engines, the best way to communicate your news is to speak plainly, using ordinary language. Jargon is language specific to certain professions or groups and is not appropriate for general readership. Avoid such terms as "capacity planning techniques" "extrapolate" and "prioritized evaluative procedures".

English sayings

Came across some interesting English sayings these few days:

Smell a rat - To recognize that something is not as it appears to be or that something dishonest is happening
Example: He's been working late with her every night this week - I smell a rat!
Origin: It comes from the days when rats were common pests and carriers of disease. Dogs were prized for their ability to smell out and destroy them. A dog which began to sniff around might well have smelt a rat, and this idea was transferred to a person who was suspicious of something.

Face the music - To accept criticism or punishment for something you have done.
Example: After he was caught with the stolen goods, he had to face the music.
Origin: One theory suggests that the saying comes from the theatre, where nervous actors must literally face the music when the curtain goes up. Others think that the origin is military and based on the drumming out ceremony that accompanied dishonourable discharge.

Oh! My God!

Baker's dozen

There is an interesting phrase "Baker's dozen" which means 13, not 12. Why? Please see here.
Key to success: When you perform a task, do something extra (especially something unexpected to your boss/client)!
